The Seaside Industry Park Rauma (SIPR) is the hub of the maritime cluster in Rauma. The industrial park hosts successful shipbuilding and marine industry companies, which, along with their extensive and efficient supplier networks, benefit from the area’s diverse infrastructure and comprehensive shared services.
The objective of the sub-project has been to optimise energy and resource use by utilising measurement and digital technology. A new, smart monitoring and control system was designed for the area to track the industrial park’s energy and resource consumption (electricity, heat, water, compressed air, gas). In 2020, a prototype was implemented within one of the area’s building complexes, which modelled the comprehensive system planned for the entire area. This prototype enabled practical testing of the system’s functionality and features. Following the prototype’s launch, system installation continued across other buildings in the area, with three additional complexes taken into use during 2021–2024.
The new system enables billing based on tenants’ actual consumption and provides a financial incentive to save energy and resources. Compared to previous systems and practices, this new monitoring and measurement system is transformative, as it provides users with real-time information, allowing companies to adjust operations dynamically. The system also enables the monitoring of the carbon footprint of individual processes and products.
The project plan set a target to reduce total consumption of electricity, heat, water, compressed air, and gas by 30% relative to turnover. By the end of 2023, the reduction was approximately 15% compared to 2017, the year prior to the project’s inception. The lower-than-expected reduction in consumption is partly explained by the fact that the area’s older networks were in better condition than anticipated, with few significant waste points identified. This was confirmed through an energy audit conducted during the project. Additionally, a model was created during the project that can be applied to other similar sites in Finland.
