Value chains of the critical raw materials

The production of raw materials needed in the energy transition is expected to grow in the EU. Several minerals essential for the EU's energy transition can be found in Finland.

With the work at REPower-CEST project we support decision-making and provide know-how about the national and international value chains of critical raw materials. We especially study the impact of international markets and geopolitical changes on the national goals for the energy transition.

The project assesses the domestic mining capacity for raw materials essential for energy transition. Assessment is also done on the regional effects of mining from the perspective of sustainability.

By studying the bottlenecks and barriers of raw material production, we create a future picture of the sufficiency of raw materials for energy supply in the future. We cooperate nationally with other projects investigating the value chains of critical raw materials and create new kind of information based on already existing datasets for the development of national expertise.

We also look at the challenges related to the international production of raw materials essential for the energy transition, the impact of geopolitical decisions and the importance of social license to operate. The focus will be on raw material production, with value chains essentially linked to international product markets.
